Various departments of the University were hard at work over the long weekend in an endeavour to cover accumulated backlogs in critical areas of operation. The backlogs include the registration of some first time entering students (FTENs), processing of students allowances, distribution of laptops for new students and cleaning of students’ residences. Renowned poet and founder of Wordfest, Professor Chris Mann, passes away

Professor Chris Mann, who was based at Rhodes University’s Institute for the Study of the Englishes in Africa (ISEA) and founded Wordfest, died peacefully at his home in Makhanda last week, following a cancer diagnosis in 2020.

A new study published in Nature is prompting the rewrite of all biology textbooks relating to the origin and evolution of vertebrates – including the modern human. The study, by Professor Rob Gess from the Albany Museum in Makhanda (Grahamstown) shows that the foundation on which most of the research done on the origin of vertebrates (any animal with a backbone such as goldfish, lizards, crows and people) has been based on incorrect assumptions.
